My first ever Honors class (aside from Honors 100) was Honors 221 D: The Science of Human Values. I think this class truly showed me what the Honors program had to offer and proved to me that my decision to join the program had been the right one. This was exactly what I had wanted out of my college experience—something more nuanced, interdisciplinary, less constrained by the traditional structures of learning. In this class, we got to explore the intersections of science and humanities, and how it was relevant to our current world.
For our final project, I researched cross-cultural psychology, as it was a facet of people's value systems that had roots in science-based disciplines. My watercolor art piece was meant to symbolize the differences between individualism and collectivism, showcasing both the benefits and drawbacks of each: collectivism prioritizes community and support but can feel restrictive, whereas individualism prioritizes independence and uniqueness but can feel isolating. I genuinely had so much fun doing the research for this project, and I ended up learning a lot.
